The graet fire of London

The great fire of London

The fire broke out at the end of a hot summer when everything had dried out by the heat. Most houses were made of wood, and in London they were built very close together.
The fire began in a bakery in Pudding Lane on September the second sixteen-sixty-six. The baker was Thomas Farryner. One madservant was afraid to jump and they left her behind.
Somebody woke up the Lord Mayor, but he didn't think the fire was serious and went back to sleep.

The themes covered over the course of the year are:

-The Medieval Castle

-The Great Fire of London

-Henry VIII and his six wives

-Studying the life of a famous person

-Florence Nightingale

Geography

-The local area around our school

-Investigating our local area

-What's in the news?

-Investigating coasts and beaches

-Connecting ourselves to the world

-A village in India

-An Island home

The pupils also do various activities to improve their reading and writing skills. This term, for example, the older children have created a story bases on their knowledge of medieval castles. They have illustrated it with authentic pictures of castle kitchens and medieval costumes and have even used calligraphy. This story, wich the children will also need to record on CD will be sent off to a national competition.

The children enjoy artistic activities, local outings, and in March they will attend a concert of sixteenth century music.

Our fairy tale

It's never to late to become good...

Once upon a time in England not far from King's Arthur famous castle of Tintagel, lived a dreadful dragon. He ate children and livestock. He was red with green eyes and had blood stained teeth and sharp claws.

In this land ther ruled a good king. His name was George and he lived with his generous wife and beautiful daughter.

One moonlessnight, the dragon abducted the princess and carried her to his cave on the edge of the forest. When the maid discovered the princess's disseappearance, the king commanded the castle dwellers seek his daughter.

At nightfall he stopped the search. Having seen the burnt banner at this daughter's window he knew the dragon was responsible. The next morning the king announced he would reward with a chest full of gold coins the person who killed the dragon and return the princess.

The outlaws who lived in the forest slayed the dragon an carried the princess back to her parents. The king however did not want to reward them because they were criminals. Outraged by this reaction, they attacked the castle. The king had one of his soldiers fire a crossbow on which a message was attached which told the outlaws if they made an effort to become good, he would give them the reward. The men found work as cooks in the neighbouring town and the king organised a banquet and ate dragon steaks.
